A MESSAGE FROM OUR CO-FOUNDER CRYSTAL

As a child, my family moved often, living in various places, some without utilities. We never truly had a place to call home. I found solace at my grandparents' house, where I felt safe and secure. However, when I was seven, my grandparents lost their home despite paying for it for twenty years, due to the owner's unexpected death and the subsequent actions of the owner’s children.

In 1979, my family finally settled in a housing project in Birmingham, Alabama. Despite its challenges, it was the first stable home we had. This experience taught me the value of a safe shelter.

In 2013, I became seriously ill and unable to work, leading to eviction and homelessness. My mother, who had dementia, was living with me, and the loss of our home was devastating. This personal experience highlighted how housing instability can easily happen and how essential and important it is for the rest of us to assist and support others during such times.
